Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Longest GD song?

Hmmm... The recent post regarding the 46+ minute Playin' from 5-21-1974 (U of Washington) got me wondering...

What is the longest song - jam - drums/space - or otherwise... that the Grateful Dead ever played?

Anyone?

There's a Truckin' that was played during Europe in '72 (I'm fairly certain it was then) that was about 45min long, just like the PITB from 5/21/74. Unfortunately I cannot tell you the show or date, but I'm sure someone here can. But, there were often themes of TOO & Nobody's Fault that were touched upon in the jam after Truckin's lyrics betweeen then & '74, so maybe it wasn't exactly Truckin' for the whole 45min. So maybe for the sake of continuity, the PITB @ 46min should stand as the longest duration for a single song to be played.

The Rotterdam DS may indeed be the longest version of a song. However I believe the song that took the longest to complete was DS from Mcnichols in 1990. on 12-12 they did the first verse into Terrapin, then 2 days later on 12-14 they finished the song with verse 2 after drums :)-

Didn't they do a sugar mags where they delayed the sunshine daydream for a week when Mr. Graham passed?

You guys are stretching this out just a bit. If you use the multiple show formula then I'm sure you can find some Playing in the Band's that lasted months before the Reprise was played. I'll stick with the 5-21-74 Playing in the Band. No segues, just song.

The Dark Star from 5/11/72 is still longer than that PitB, so it beats that out. Drums counts as part of Dark Star since Phil is still on stage playing along.

The top 3 I can think of are:
1. 5/11/72 - Dark Star - 47:10
2. 5/21/74 - Playing in the Band - 46:26
3. 9/11/74 - Phil and Ned/Seastones - 42:28

Edit: Actually, I was wrong about this. Second place actually belongs to the Turn on Your Lovelight from 6/6/69.

New top 3:
1. 5/11/72 - Dark Star - 47:10
2. 6/6/69 - Turn On Your Lovelight - 47:00
3. 5/21/74 - Playing in the Band - 46:26

I think it would be the Rotterdam Dark Star (5-11-72).

There's no recording of it, and from what I've heard, it was only two hours. It was supposedly during the first time Mickey ever played with them, but most people now believe that it really wasn't that long.

From what I've heard, that's one of the myths attached to the Dead. I don't believe it for a second. One hour--maybe. But that's just the stuff of acid riddled bullshitters. Like when the played "Unbroken Chain" in 1974. I swear it's true. A friend of a friend's girlfriend's sister's classmate knew a chick who dated a guy who had first row tickets and who told her about it. Honest.
